Here’s an easy and simple recipe for an authentic American-style hotdog recipe you can try from the comfort of your own home! The Meat Guy sausages and buns are all delivered frozen, so we’ll also be including detailed instructions for properly thawing the ingredients.
THE MEAT GUY’S ORIGINAL RAW SAUSAGES ARE PERFECT FOR HOTDOGS!
The Meat Guy’s original sausages are probably the best in Japan for making homemade hotdogs. It’s just the right size to fit perfectly in a regular hotdog bun. Each sausage is about 100g and 10cm-13cm long (which is about 5 times the size of a normal puny sausage in Japan.) The Meat Guy’s hotdog buns are about 16cm long, so the sausages are just the right size to fit snugly in one of those buns while still having enough room for all the other delicious ingredients you want to add! (※The wight of each sausage is about 100g, but may vary depending on which type of sausage you buy.)
THAWING
RAW SAUSAGE THAWING METHOD
To get the best results, make sure to thaw out the raw sausages completely before cooking. Here are the 2 best thawing methods that The Meat Guy recommends:
FIRST METHOD: Double-wrap the sausages in a plastic bag, and let it thaw out naturally in the refrigerator for about 4 hours.
SECOND METHOD: Double-wrap the sausages in a plastic bag, and submerge in a bowl filled with ice water. It should be completely thawed out after about 10 mins.
HOTDOG BUNS THAWING METHOD
Take the buns out of the freezer about 10 mins. before consuming
★If you plan on eating it right away:
①Heat in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds.
②Bake in an oven toaster until your desired doneness.
★If you aren’t planning on eating right away:
①Transfer the buns from the freezer to the refrigerator.
②It should be fully thawed out after about 1 hour.
DELICIOUS AMERICAN HOTDOG RECIPE
For this recipe, we’ll be using The Meat Guy’s original spicy sausage and frozen hotdog buns. This recipe yields 5 servings. One hotdog costs about 350 yen. (※Cost of shipping and other ingredients used are not included in the computation) Why not try out this simple and delicious recipe that’ll bring back fond memories of the ballpark!
- Ingredients (5 servings)
-
- ・Meat Guy raw sausage (this time spicy sausage)
- ・Hot dog buns
(the buns we’ll be using for this recipe are the frozen buns with sesame seeds from The Meat Guy) - ・Cabbage 1/4
- ・Onion 1/2
- ・Salt and pepper to taste
- ・Butter (personal preference)
- ・Vegetable oil (personal preference)
- ・Ketchup (personal preference)
- ・Mustard (personal preference)
SOFT AND TENDER CABBAGE
Wash the cabbage well, remove the core and inedible leaves, then julienne (shred into thin strips.) Pre-heat a frying pan over low heat with a small amount of vegetable oil. Start cooking the cabbage and move it around the pan to ensure that it cooks evenly. Cover the pan and let the cabbage steam until tender. Once it’s soft, season with salt and pepper to taste, mix it well and transfer to a plate.
CARAMELIZED ONIONS
Wash the onions first to remove any dirt, then dice into preferred size. Cry it all out… It’ll all be worth it once you sink your teeth into these delicious hotdogs. Pre-heat a frying pan with your desired amount of butter. (I personally prefer my onions bathing in delicious butter…) Once the butter is melted, fry up the onions. Cook until nice and golden brown. When you’re satisfied, transfer to another plate.
THE MEAT GUY’S SAUSAGE COOKING METHOD
Preheat a frying pan with a bit of vegetable oil over low heat. Take the thawed-out sausages out of the bag and fry over low heat. Turn the sausages several times so the surface doesn’t burn. Be careful not to turn the heat up too high; otherwise, the sausages will end up cooked on the outside but still raw on the inside. If you find that the sausages have already finished cooking on the outside, but still remain a bit raw inside, even if the heat is on low, you can just cover the pan with a lid and allow it to continue cooking. After it finishes cooking, let it rest for a bit to lock in all the delicious meat juices. These sausages are not pre-cooked, so please make sure to cook them thoroughly before consumption.
HOTDOG BUNS
Thaw the buns in advance and toast them slightly in an oven toaster while the sausages are resting. Cut the buns in the middle to make enough room for the sausages.
HOTDOG ASSEMBLY
The hard part is over! Now, all you have to do is assemble the hotdogs as you like. Here’s how we like to do it: In the bun, place the steamed cabbage, caramelized onions, then the sausage (in that order). Finally, add ketchup and mustard as you like. The Meat Guy’s sausages are already good on their own, so you can eat it without any condiments. It’s up to you! Go crazyyy!
