Have you ever just wanted to gnaw on a big ole steak before? You can go out and get one at a restaurant… but by cooking a thick 1-pound steak at home, you can fine tune it to suit your taste!
Today, we’ll be sharing some tips on how to cook a one-pound steak using a frying pan or an oven. Plus, an exquisite steak sauce recipe to really get that restaurant-style experience! Are you up for the challenge?
HOW TO PREP YOUR 1 LB STEAK
The key to a delicious steak starts from preparation. If you end up neglecting this stage (especially when you want that steak quick!) then you may end up with a steak that’s about half as good as a well-prepared one. Here are the three main points to remember:
1.THAW SLOWLY
First and foremost, you have to thaw your meat properly. Thawing in ice water is the best way to do it, so you don’t lose the steak’s meatiness. Place the unopened pack of meat in a thick plastic bag, and in a bowl that’s about twice as big as the meat. Fill the bowl with ice and add some water too. Be careful to check that there’s still ice in the bowl. Add more ice if needed.
A one-pound ribeye steak can be thawed out in about 12 hours. Be careful not to let any water leak into the packaging of the meat. Another way to thaw the steak is to leave in the refrigerator or the designated chilling area of your fridge. If you leave the unopened pack of meat in the fridge, it’ll be thawed out in about 2 days.
2.GET RID OF THE EXTRA TENDONS
Tendons found in block meat tend to be on the tougher side. We recommend removing this part before cooking. You can use these cut-offs in stews! In the ribeye steak, the muscle can be found between the fat and meat layer. Scrape that off with a sharp kitchen knife!
3.LET IT COME BACK TO ROOM TEMPERATURE BEFORE COOKING
Cooking the steak right after it comes out of the fridge or ice water will lead to uneven cooking. Since it’s still cold, the center of the meat may end up being undercooked or even raw while the surface isn’t. That’s a no-go! After taking it out of the fridge or ice water, place the meat on a plate and let it rest at room temperature for about 10 to 30 minutes before cooking.
HOW TO COOK A 1 LB STEAK TO MAKE IT SOFT AND DELICIOUS
Once you’ve made sure that you prepared your meat well, all that’s left to do is cook it! The key to a deliciously cooked steak is to take your time, and not shock it with high temperatures! If you make your pan too hat right from the start, you’ll end up with a steak that’s cooked on the outside and raw on the inside.
Another thing to remember is to let your meat rest before digging in. We get that you may want to bite into that steak right after it’s cooked. Doing that will cause the meat juices to leak out! With thicker steaks, the juices that’ll flow out are even more! So, in order to have a delicious steak that’s juicy right down to the very last bite, you’ll need to let the meat rest until it’s about the temperature of your skin’s surface.
With all those things in mind, let’s begin! Here’s our guide for how to cook a thick steak using either a frying pan or an oven:
COOKING SLOWLY WITH A FRYING PAN
- <DIRECTIONS>
-
- ①Season your 1-pound steak with olive oil, salt, and pepper, then let it rest for about 10 minutes.
- ②Preheat the pan at medium heat, place the meat in the pan, cover the pan with a lid, then reduce the heat to low. Let the meat sear for about 10 minutes.
- ③Still on low heat, flip the steak over and cook the other side for another 10 minutes
- ④Remove the meat from the pan and wipe off the excess juices. Add olive oil and heat on high before placing the meat back to sear the surface.
- ⑤Wrap the meat in aluminum foil and let it rest for about 10 minutes. After that, you can cut it up and enjoy!
ROASTING IN THE OVEN
- <DIRECTIONS>
-
- ①Season your 1-pound steak with olive oil, salt, and pepper, then let it rest for about 10 minutes.
- ②Line your baking tray with an oven sheet, then spread some sliced onions on top along with the steak.
- ③Without preheating the oven, place the tray in. Bake at 150 degrees for about 15 minutes, flip it over, and cook for another 15 minutes. Insert an iron or metal skewer into the meat, and check the part of the skewer that touched the center of the meat to see if it’s cooked. Simply touch that part of the skewer to your lips. If it’s not cold, you can let the meat rest in the oven for 10 minutes. Let it cool down, cut it up, and enjoy!
